5 Myths About Eco-Friendly Cleaning (That We’re Ready to Bust)

5 Myths About Eco-Friendly Cleaning (That We’re Ready to Bust)

Eco-friendly cleaning has come a long way, from homemade vinegar sprays to high-performance formulas that rival, and sometimes outperform, conventional products. But the myths still persist.

Let’s clear the air, literally. Here are five of the most common misconceptions about eco-friendly cleaning and the truth behind them.

1. Myth: Eco-Friendly Products Aren’t as Strong

Truth: Some are stronger, just in a different way.

The idea that natural or biodegradable means “weak” is outdated. Take our Instant Disinfectant Spray, for example. It’s made with hypochlorous acid, a naturally occurring compound that is 100 times more effective than chlorine bleach at killing bacteria, viruses and mould in only three seconds. It’s also safe enough to use on baby toys and pet bowls.

Cleaning power doesn’t have to come from harsh chemicals or toxic fumes. It can come from science-backed ingredients that do the job without harming your health or indoor air quality.

2. Myth: Eco-Friendly Products Are More Expensive

Truth: Concentrated formulas mean you use, and buy, less.

The upfront price of an eco-friendly product may look higher, but many non-toxic brands, including Grounded, avoid unnecessary filler ingredients such as water, sulphates and thickeners.

Our products are concentrated on purpose, so you only need a small amount. Don’t compare shelf prices or prices by volume until you have checked the recommended dosage. For example:

  • Pure Soap: One litre makes 33 buckets of cleaning solution, costing approximately 33 shillings per bucket.
  • Laundry Powder: A 2 kg pack provides approximately 66 washes, compared with roughly 20 washes from 2 kg of some conventional detergents. This works out to approximately 39 shillings per load, compared with 100 shillings per load.
  • Dishes Bar: Although it may look like a dishwashing paste, it is a 100% solid soap bar. In a household of five people, one bar can last for up to a month.

Watching your wallet? Look for multi-purpose products such as Pure Soap and Multipurpose Concentrate, or long-lasting solid products such as our Dishes Bar.

Because our products are concentrated, you can clean your home for less. When diluted correctly, they can last much longer than their supermarket counterparts. Buying fewer plastic bottles can also save money while reducing waste.

3. Myth: Eco-Friendly Cleaners Don’t Work as Well

Truth: They work, just differently.

Let’s be honest: natural cleaning can sometimes require a little more patience. Without harsh solvents or synthetic degreasers, you may need to leave a product on a surface for five to ten minutes so it can lift grime properly.

However, this also applies to many conventional cleaning products. Bleach, for example, generally needs sufficient contact time to disinfect a surface effectively.

Our Instant Disinfectant uses hypochlorous acid, a naturally occurring compound that is also produced by the human body as part of its immune response. It offers powerful disinfection without the toxicity associated with many conventional products.

The widespread use of antibacterial ingredients such as triclosan in hand soaps may also contribute to antimicrobial resistance. These products can disrupt the balance of microorganisms by killing both harmful and beneficial bacteria.

When you need extra cleaning power, products such as our Scouring Powder and OxyBoost provide an additional boost using ingredients such as bicarbonate of soda and oxygen-based bleaching agents. Once activated, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen.

It’s not about sacrificing performance. It’s about understanding how natural cleaning products work and using them correctly.

4. Myth: If It Doesn’t Foam or Smell Strong, It Isn’t Working

Truth: Foam and fragrance are often marketing tools.

Many of us were raised to believe that more bubbles mean better cleaning. However, foaming agents such as SLS, or sodium lauryl sulphate, do not necessarily improve cleaning performance. They are often included because consumers associate foam with cleanliness.

Similarly, the “lemon-fresh” scent used in many conventional products is often created using synthetic fragrance blends, some of which may contain allergens or potentially harmful compounds.

Some people also associate the smell of chlorine bleach with cleanliness. However, the strong smell can come from fumes released during use, which may irritate the respiratory system and affect indoor air quality.

At Grounded, we don’t use synthetic foaming agents or perfumes. Our products clean effectively without unnecessary additives. If you prefer a scented product, you can add your chosen essential oils to our Unscented Pure Soap.

5. Myth: Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products Aren’t Really Eco-Friendly

Truth: Many brands make this difficult to assess because they don’t disclose their ingredients.

In Europe, numerous cleaning ingredients are restricted or banned because of their potential environmental or health risks. Some of these ingredients remain widely used across Africa, where regulation and ingredient disclosure may be more limited.

Because there is no widely accessible eco-certification system in Kenya, we have taken responsibility for making our products and processes more transparent:

  • We disclose every ingredient used in our products.
  • We screen our formulations using international databases that assess health and environmental impacts.
  • We manufacture locally using oils grown in East Africa, helping to reduce supply-chain emissions.

Eco-friendly cleaning isn’t a passing phase. It’s a healthier, smarter and more transparent approach to cleaning, especially in regions where consumer protection and ingredient disclosure still have room to improve.

Final Word: Clean Smarter, Not Harsher

The next time someone dismisses eco-friendly cleaning as weak or expensive, share this article with them. Better yet, hand them a bottle of Pure Soap and encourage them to try it for a week.

You don’t need harsh chlorine-based products to keep your home clean. You simply need the right tools, the correct techniques and a little truth to cut through the myths.
